History of the Jet Ski®

In 1972, the innovative Japanese company Kawasaki® released the first stand-up personal watercraft, the Jet Ski®. Kawasaki® had previously been known for their motorcycles and other heavy machinery. Jet Ski® took its plans from the personal watercraft prototype developed by Norwegian-American inventor Clayton Jacobson II in the 1960s. Jacobson was a motorcycle racer who suffered skin abrasions in a minor crash the day he invented the Jet Ski®, lamenting the lack of a vehicle that was as exciting to ride as a motorcycle without being as dangerous to fall from. He created a personal watercraft prototype that allowed for riding at high speeds on the water and provided it to Kawasaki® in 1970.

Jet Ski® came into the US market in 1973 and became immediately popular due to their flat hull and two-stroke engine that let them cut through water with ease, offering a smooth and fast ride. Powersports fans snapped up Jet Ski® quickly throughout the 1980s and 1990s, while Kawasaki® continued to improve upon their initial designs to provide their customers with quality watercraft that remained stable in the water.

If you want to sit down, the Ultra 310R can seat up to three passengers on a gripping material that will keep you balanced on the ride. A supercharged, inter-cooled four-stroke engine provides maximum performance, while the handlebars are able to be moved into eighteen configurations using clamps. This gives you more flexibility with how you ride. For new riders, the SLO (Smart Learning Operation) mode decreases the engine’s speed so you can get a good feel for your new watercraft without going too fast.
